Mastering the Job Search Sneak Peek Series: Module 2 – Creating Your Career Roadmap

I love, love, love this module. It is one of my most requested and most valuable coaching topics. Believe it or not, most people do not have a career roadmap. In fact, I didn’t have one and didn’t realize how important it was until a mentor showed me how powerful of a tool it can be. The purpose of your career roadmap is to identify your goals and the stepping stones needed to achieve them. I personally like to make it a game – collect experience points by learning new skills, building your network, and completing challenges. You continue leveling up until you reach the final challenge – your dream role before you retire. There are many ways to get where you want to go in your career, so this roadmap lets you know what your best choices are each step of the way.

The first lesson is all about your vision for your career, and we go deep. Without a clear vision that you can see and feel, you have no clear career path. You will not intentionally or strategically search for or accept new roles, and the roles you take may pay you more but won’t necessarily propel you forward.

The second lesson is all about reverse engineering that vision. We work backward to figure out exactly what it will take to get you there.

The third lesson turns this data into a tangible Career Growth Action Plan. This, combined with the 10 Key Decisions from module 1, will make your job search and career planning so much easier. They will save you a tremendous amount of time and energy because you will know exactly what you want and need to achieve your career goals.

Early in my career – when I had no career roadmap (other than dreams of being the National Security Advisor) – I just assumed I would work hard and eventually work my way to the top. I never sat down to think about what it would take to get there. What skills, experiences, roles, network, and training would I need? How would I get them? Sitting down and taking the time to clarify my vision and goals for my career allowed me to answer these questions. I could then focus my job search only on those areas that would propel me forward.

The fourth lesson takes this a step further by honing in on specific companies and roles that you should be targeting in your current job search. Another time saver that will also enable you to do more research and be better prepared for the application and interview process with those organizations.

The final lesson is a gap analysis. We will look at your Career Growth Action Plan and the ideal role and level you will be targeting. We’ll complete a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis that will give you actions to complete now to improve your positioning in the market.

This process is eye opening, and for me it completely changed the direction of my career and improved my life. I cannot wait to share it with you!
